Smart Tiles is a tile-based navigation web part for modern SharePoint Online pages. Site owners build visually appealing, responsive navigation menus directly on the page — quick-links bars, department panels, mosaic layouts — with icons, colors, background images and audience targeting, all without code. There are six tile sizes — Extra Small (15% of the row), Small (30%), Medium (45%), Large (65%), Extra Large (80%) and Full Width (100%). Tiles wrap into rows automatically and stretch to fill the available width, and the web part can be placed in a full-width section. Font size, icon size and indents are adjustable. You can choose from five icon sets — Standard (more than 1,800 Fluent UI icons), File type, App (Microsoft 365 app logos), Azure services and Vitextra — or upload a custom SVG/PNG image. Each tile can also have a background image from a URL or a site library; YouTube links automatically get a thumbnail and a play button. Yes. Each tile supports audience targeting by SharePoint site groups or Microsoft Entra ID groups, so a tile is visible only to members of the selected groups. Tiles can link to web URLs, tenant-relative paths, page anchors, `mailto:`, `tel:`, `sms:` and Microsoft Teams links, optionally opening in a new tab. ### How do colors and hover effects work? Background and font colors are chosen separately from six theme accent colors (which follow the site theme) plus 31 predefined Fluent UI colors, black and white. Nine hover effects (brightness, blur, hue rotate, etc.) with adjustable strength and duration are available and respect keyboard focus and reduced-motion settings. Smart Tiles works only on modern SharePoint Online pages; SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 are not supported. Adding the web part requires the Edit permission level, visitors need read access to any background or custom images, and changes become visible after the page is republished. A tile has either a background image or a color, and tile height cannot be set directly. The subscription is tenant-wide without user limits.
