SharePoint Path Checker

Check file and folder names before moving them to SharePoint Online or OneDrive: invalid characters, reserved names and the 400-character path limit
For example the output of dir /s /b or Get-ChildItem -Recurse | Select-Object -ExpandProperty FullName. Up to 20,000 lines.
Optional. Its path counts towards the 400-character limit, e.g. https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/hr/Shared Documents
Optional. The prefix to remove from each path, e.g. \\fileserver\share or D:\Data. Drive letters are always removed.

Paths are checked in your browser and never leave this page.

Characters # and % are allowed in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for work or school. Path length counts the decoded path after the host name, including the site, library, folders and file name.

How it works

The checker applies the rules from Microsoft's "Restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint" to every path and suggests a name that will upload.

  1. Export the list

Run dir /s /b or Get-ChildItem -Recurse on the file share or folder you plan to move and copy the output.

  2. Paste and check

Add the destination library URL to calculate the full path length, and specify the source path prefix to remove.

  3. Fix before you migrate

Errors block the upload, warnings cause sync problems. Copy the tab-separated rename list into Excel or a rename script.
